Do you know · how to perform the Heimlich maneuver for a choking pet? · how to do mouth-to-snout resuscitation? · that azaleas and mistletoe are poisonous to pets? · how to teach your child to interact safely with animals?
Pet safety and first aid are an important aspects of conscientious care for pets. You can "bone up" on pet first aid online, build a first aid kit, read books, and/or take a course from the American Red Cross.
American Red Cross Courses: More than 65 chapters of the American Red Cross now offer courses on first aid for dogs and cats. The emphasis is on prevention, such as keeping your pet leashed when out of doors and pet-proof storage of medicines and household chemicals. Pet owners can also learn mouth-to-snout resuscitation; how to use the Heimlich maneuver on pets; how to stanch bleeding, splint broken bones and treat for shock; how to treat and prevent poisoning and snake bites; and how to handle exposure and car sickness. To learn about these courses in your area, call the American Red Cross at (800)520-5433.
