Comprehensive
compilation of information on the most important
environmental considerations facing the business community -- Air Quality, Sound and
Vibration, EMF's, Bioaerosols, Asbestos, Lead and Cumulative Trauma Disorders. Corporate
Health and Safety is designed to consolidate much of the information needed to develop a
strong foundation on which to build environmental solutions. The title holds a double
meaning, in that the health and safety of corporate personnel is intertwined with the well
being of the corporate entity. Potential liability and lost productivity are real issues
facing the business community. The authors represent a broad range of knowledge and
expertise with each chapter offering a thoughtful and thorough overview of the state of
knowledge and technology.
Harris provides a
high-level overview of managing employee health, allocating scarce resources, and
designing and utilizing plans that really work. He presents a rationale and outlines for
employee training in self-care and the wise use of the medical system.
Jeffrey S. Harris draws on his extensive experience in both business and medicine to
provide invaluable guidance to employers and employees that can help them take a more
proactive role in health care. He details how employers can start strategically managing
what it is they are purchasing and how much they pay, and offers guidance for helping
employees make wise decisions about the use of medical care, selecting managed care plans,
actively managing their own care, and instituting preventive care techniques.

critical issues relating to their implementation, evaluation, and promotion. This
excellent collection of original essays demonstrates that when industry incorporates
health programs into the work environment such programs directly result in the well-being
of employees, in addition to low absenteeism, high morale, and low insurance costs.

Reader Review:
This book targets fund managers and other professionals involved in the day-to-day
operation of Taft-Hartley funds. Such funds have lagged corporate plan sponsors in
adopting wellness programs. One reason might be class bias inherent in wellness programs:
Rank-and-file employees are typically less interested in health imagery than are managers
and executives. It is incumbent upon Taft Hartley funds to help employees to better health
free of class bias.
Publisher's comment:
This is the first comprehensive publication on health promotion and wellness programs for
multiemployer plans.
